International Women’s Day 2024

Empowering Women in Media: A Call to Action for Inclusion.

On this International Women’s Day 2024, the resonance of the theme is palpable throughout Kenya’s media landscape. It speaks volumes about empowerment, the breaking of barriers, and the pivotal role women play—especially in community media.

Mr. Tom Mboya, the National Coordinator of Kenya Community Media Network (KCOMNET), fervently echoes this sentiment. “We are dedicated to integrating gender balance into our activities,” he asserts. “It’s the initial stride towards genuine inclusivity within community media.”

Looking back, the history of Kenya’s media industry reveals a stark reality: a long-standing dominance by men. For decades, men have predominantly occupied management positions, shaping the narratives and dynamics of community media. However, Phenice Wankio and Filikita Jilo, both seasoned radio producers and fervent advocates for gender equality, are resolute in rewriting this narrative. They champion the active involvement of women in decision-making processes at all levels, emphasizing their indispensable contributions to the day-to-day operations of stations.

Their stance finds resonance in Ajema Hilda, a station manager at Ghetto FM in Mukuru Kwa Njenga. “Setting an example is crucial,” she emphasizes. “We must fully embrace inclusion, from crafting gender-sensitive training materials to actively involving women in the decision-making process.”

As the sun rises on International Women’s Day, let us heed their clarion call. Let’s aspire towards a media landscape where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and women are empowered to shine. Investing in women isn’t just about individual empowerment; it’s about uplifting entire communities, fostering economic growth, and creating a more equitable society for generations to come.

This week, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of our female community journalists, our dedicated female staff, and all our partners who make our work possible.
Together, let’s pave the way for a future marked by genuine gender balance and inclusion in the media.
